Lead

Someone senior owning digital, without hiring a director

One or two days a week inside the business. In the executive meeting, on the roadmap, accountable for the decisions. The same person every week, for as long as it is useful and no longer.

Where this sits

This is the deepest engagement in the business. It is also the easiest to stop.

Digital decisions are being made by people who were hired to do something else

The finance director is holding the supplier contract. The operations lead is arbitrating between two systems that were never meant to talk to each other. The chief executive is being asked to have a view on AI by a board that has read something worrying. Nobody is wrong, and nobody owns it.

A full-time digital director costs six figures and is the wrong answer for most organisations of this size. The alternative is not a consultant who visits, writes a document and leaves. It is someone who is genuinely part of the leadership team, one or two days a week, with the authority that comes from being in the room when it counts.

The engagement

Fractional digital leadership

A director-level digital lead in the business one or two days a week. Sitting in the executive meeting, owning the roadmap, holding suppliers to account and making the calls that an advisor cannot make from outside.

What the arrangement protects

No software to sell

The roadmap is not quietly shaped by what I would earn from it. There is nothing I would earn from it.

A named exit

Every engagement has a handover point written into it. The aim is an organisation that no longer needs the arrangement.

One person, no bench

No juniors, no subcontractors, no account manager. The person in the meeting is the person doing the work.

Evidence

Where this arrangement has held up.

Case study, early-stage software

Ten weeks from no category to a staged site, run by one person

Strategy, brand system, content architecture and an accessibility fix, delivered at a pace an internal hire could not have reached from a standing start.

Track record

Board-level delivery across legal, financial services, property, travel, health and not-for-profit

Thirty years of being the person who has to make the call, not the person advising on it.

    A 30-minute conversation, free

What is actually going wrong, who currently owns it, and whether one or two days a week would be enough to change it.

  2. 2

    A scoping session

Half a day with the leadership team to agree what the role owns, what it does not, and how it is measured. Chargeable, and deducted if the engagement proceeds.

  3. 3

    A six-month initial term

Reviewed at three months and at six. Either side can end it with a month. There is no long tie-in and no notice trap.
