Charity digital strategy

Charities get sold digital projects they don't need by people who won't be there when the money runs out. I help you decide what digital should do for the charity, what it should cost and who should deliver it.

I take no referral fees or commission from agencies.

Who this is for

You're a chief executive, a director or a trustee. You're accountable to a board for every pound. You need a digital plan you can explain to them and a price you can stand behind.

You might need this if:

  • The website, the CRM and the fundraising platform were each bought separately and none of them talk to each other
  • An agency has proposed a project and nobody on the board can tell whether it's good value
  • Digital decisions land on whoever is least afraid of them
  • A funder or the board has asked for a digital strategy and you don't have one
  • You've had a grant for digital and need to spend it well

What I do

Four steps. Each one gives you something you can use on its own.

  1. Review what you have

Every system, every contract and what each one costs. Most charities are paying for things they don't use.

  2. Agree the priorities

A workshop with the leadership team and, where it helps, the trustees. What digital must do for the charity in the next two years, ranked.

  3. Write the plan

A short written strategy, sized to the budget you actually have. Written for a board, not a developer.

  4. Help you deliver it

Briefs for agencies, help choosing them and a check on what they deliver. Optional, and only where you need it.

What it costs

Fixed prices, agreed in writing before work starts. I know charity budgets. The price is set to be defensible to a board.

Digital review

What you have, what it costs and what to stop paying for. A quick win for most charities.

What this looks like in practice

A care home charity serving a large local community

From a website nobody could update to a strategy the care teams shaped themselves

The problem
A dated website on an old WordPress build with a bespoke theme nobody could update, and no plan for what came next.
What changed
Workshops with the care teams who would own the content, a full digital audit, a written strategy and a tender run to Charity Commission guidelines for transparency and value for money.

On time and to budgetThree agencies pitched. The charity chose the best value, not the cheapest, and could say why.

Questions buyers ask

  • We're a small charity. Is this for us?

Yes. The digital review is built for charities with one or two people covering everything. If the honest answer is that you don't need a strategy, I'll say so.

  • Do you take commission from agencies or software companies?

No. Never. I'm paid by you and only by you.

  • Can you present to our trustees?

Yes. I was a trustee for six years, so I know what a board needs to hear and what it doesn't.

  • Do you build websites or set up CRMs?

No. I help you decide what you need, choose who delivers it and check that they do.

  • How long does it take?

Anything from a week. It depends how complicated the current website is.

  • Can grant funding pay for this?

Often, yes. Many digital and capacity-building grants cover independent advice. I can help you describe the work in a way that fits the funder's terms.

  • Do you work with charities outside the North East?

Yes. Most of the work is remote. I'll travel for the workshop and the board meeting where it helps.
