Does a small business need Google Search Console?
Yes. It is free, takes about five minutes to set up, and is where you submit the sitemap an SEO plugin generates.

Page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure and an SEO plugin, which together take about four hours. 42 of the 55 businesses I audited had basic SEO problems, 76%, and almost none were technical: one business had 22 pages without a single custom page title. Write titles under 60 characters for your ten most important pages, meta descriptions of about 155 characters, one H1 heading per page, and install Yoast or RankMath to generate a sitemap.
The basics, rather than anything advanced. 42 out of 55 businesses I audited had SEO problems, which is 76%, and they were not link-building strategies, schema markup or crawl budgets. They were things that take minutes to fix and had simply never been done. One business had 22 pages on its website and not one had a custom page title, so every page showed the same generic company name in Google, with nothing in the listing to make a searcher click even when they searched for exactly what the business sold.
Say what is on the page, in the words someone would search for, in under 60 characters, and end with your brand. The page title is the blue clickable headline in Google's results and the first thing a potential customer sees, and in most sites I audited it was missing, generic or wrong. One business had 44 page titles too short to be useful; another had titles duplicated across pages so Google could not tell them apart; several used only the company name on every page. "Acme Ltd" on every page tells a searcher nothing. "Emergency plumbing repairs in Newcastle | Acme Ltd" tells them what they will find, and takes about two minutes to write.
About 155 characters that say what the page is about and give the searcher a reason to click. It is the grey text under the headline, and if you do not write one Google picks a chunk of your page, often the wrong one. One website had meta descriptions on only 3 pages, and those were the wrong length. Another had over 300 quality backlinks giving it real authority, and no meta descriptions at all, wasting that credibility at the moment someone decides whether to click. A third had 180 pages with descriptions far too long, cut off mid-sentence because Google truncates anything over about 155 characters. Your top ten pages take about half an hour.
Because it tells Google, and visitors scanning the page, what each page covers. Every page should have one H1 heading as its main title and H2 headings for sections. Most businesses I audited had no H1 at all, or a CMS pulling it from the wrong field. One site had H1 headings under 30 characters on most pages; another had H2 headings auto-generated from product descriptions rather than written as section titles. Each page takes about five minutes to fix.
On WordPress, yes, and it takes ten minutes. Yoast SEO and RankMath are both free; I recommended Yoast in 15 of the 55 audits because it adds a box to each page for the title and meta description, with a live preview of the Google listing. It flags missing descriptions, titles that are too long and pages with no headings, and it generates a sitemap automatically. 11 of the 55 businesses had sitemap issues a plugin would have fixed straight away.
Because they do not explain enough for Google or a customer. Several audits flagged service and product pages with fewer than 300 words that should have had 700 or more. A kitchen installation page with 150 words and some photos gives both almost nothing, next to a competitor's 800 words on process, materials and timelines. The point is explaining what you do, who it is for and why someone should choose you, and case studies are one of the most natural ways to build that content.
For the afternoon itself: in hour one, install Yoast or RankMath and submit its sitemap to Google Search Console. In hour two, write page titles for your ten most important pages. In hour three, write meta descriptions for the same ten. In hour four, check every page has an H1 and note the thin pages to flesh out over the following weeks. None of it is complicated; it is tedious, which is a different thing.

Not as a trick. Service and product pages with fewer than 300 words simply do not explain enough, for Google or for a customer, which is why pages that should have had 700 or more were flagged in the audits.
