When people hear “digital strategy” they picture a thick document, a big agency and a bill to match. It doesn’t have to be any of those things. A strategy is just a set of decisions about what you’ll do, what you won’t, and in what order. The good ones fit on a page.
The reason most SMEs don’t have one isn’t cost. It’s that strategy feels like a luxury when you’re busy. So decisions get made one at a time, reactively, whenever a salesperson calls or a competitor does something shiny. That’s not a plan, it’s a series of flinches, and it’s expensive.
what a real strategy answers
A useful digital strategy answers a few plain questions. Who are we actually for, and where do those people spend their attention. What’s the one or two things we want our digital presence to do this year. What do we stop doing because it isn’t working. And what does the next 12 months look like, split into things to fix now, things to build next, and things to keep an eye on for later.
short, medium and long is the trick
The mistake I see is treating everything as urgent or everything as someday. Splitting it into short, medium and long term is what makes a plan survive contact with a busy week. The short list keeps you moving. The medium list stops you forgetting the bigger bets. The long list means you’re not blindsided when the ground shifts. I’ve used this with everyone from one-person firms to companies juggling several suppliers, and it scales down just fine.
future-proofing on a budget
Future-proofing sounds expensive and mostly isn’t. It’s about not painting yourself into corners; choosing tools you can leave, keeping your own data in your own hands, not betting the business on one platform’s whims. Cheap decisions made deliberately now save painful, costly ones later.
what you get for the money
For around £1500 you can sit down with someone who’s seen a lot of these, talk through where the business is going, and come out with a one-page plan you’ll actually use; priorities, a rough order, and the confidence to say no to the next distraction. The value isn’t the document. It’s every wasted month and misspent budget it stops you from repeating.
