I get this one a lot. “We’re getting traffic, the numbers look fine, but the enquiries aren’t coming.” Traffic that doesn’t convert isn’t a traffic problem. It’s an experience problem, and it’s usually fixable without spending a penny more on getting people there.
Here’s what gets me about this. Most businesses pour money into the top of the funnel; ads, SEO, posts, more ads. Then the website they send all those people to hasn’t been touched in three years. It’s like running a great marketing campaign for a shop with a jammed front door.
the usual suspects
When a site gets visitors but no customers, it’s normally one of a few things. The page doesn’t say, within a couple of seconds, what you do and why someone should care. The thing you want people to do is buried, vague, or repeated so often it’s become wallpaper. The site is slow, or it’s a mess on a phone, which is where most of your visitors actually are. Or there’s nothing that makes a nervous first-time buyer trust you; no proof, no faces, no sign there are real people behind it.
clarity beats clever
I’ve watched businesses agonise over the shade of a button while the headline above it makes no sense to anyone outside the company. Plain words win. Tell people what you do, who it’s for, what to do next. A confused visitor never buys; they just leave, quietly, and you never hear about it.
test it on a real human
Sit someone who’s never seen your site in front of it and ask them, out loud, what the business does and what they’d click. Don’t help them. The squirming is uncomfortable and it’s the most useful 10 minutes you’ll spend all month. Every place they hesitate is a place you’re losing money.
the budget version
You don’t need a rebuild. For around £1500 of focused work you can get the homepage and your main money pages reviewed, the messaging sharpened, the calls to action sorted and the mobile experience checked. The traffic you’re already paying for converts better, so every pound you spend upstream works harder. That’s the cheapest growth there is: making the visitors you already have actually do something.
