A short, useful summary of what is changing in SEO because of AI, and what is not.
What is changing
The search results page itself. Google’s AI Overviews now answer many questions directly at the top of the results. Users get the answer without clicking through. For informational queries, click-through rates have dropped. If your traffic is “people came to learn what X is”, that traffic is being intercepted before it reaches your site.
The kind of content that ranks. Long-tail informational content used to be a reliable strategy. Write 50 articles answering common questions, accumulate traffic over time. That strategy is mostly broken now. The AI can write 50 articles in an afternoon and Google can detect them. Volume without depth is no longer a strategy.
The level of expertise expected. Google’s E-E-A-T signals (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness) matter more than they did. Articles with named authors who have credentials, original research, or first-hand experience now outrank articles that are just reorganised versions of what is already on the internet.
What is not changing
Technical SEO. Site speed, crawlability, structured data, internal linking, canonical tags. All still matter. AI does not change any of this.
The value of original research. Survey 200 customers and publish the findings. That content cannot be matched by any AI because the AI does not have your customers. Original research has gone from “nice to have” to “the only durable content strategy”.
The value of being specific. AI generates abstractions. Humans (and now Google) reward specificity. Examples, numbers, named situations.
The shape of the work, on a normal Tuesday, is mostly the same: improve the technical foundation, write content that is useful and specific to your audience, build links from sources that have authority. The thing that has changed is that the content half is now harder. AI raises the floor and the ceiling at the same time. Mediocre content is everywhere. Genuinely useful content is more valuable than ever.
