A digital strategy without coaching usually fails

I have seen plenty of well-written digital strategies fail in execution. The deck was clear. The reasoning was sound. The budgets were approved. Twelve months later, the team had done about a third of what was planned and the things they had done were the easy ones.

The gap between the strategy on paper and the work that actually gets done is where coaching matters.

What coaching does that strategy alone cannot

Holds the team accountable in week three when something has gone wrong and the instinct is to pretend it has not. The strategy assumed everyone would face into difficult conversations. They do not, by default. A coach asks the question that the team has been avoiding.

Translates the strategy into specific decisions. The strategy says “improve customer journey on mobile”. A coach asks “which page first, with which fix, by when”. The strategy stays at the level of intent. Coaching brings it down to a Tuesday afternoon.

Catches drift. The team agreed to focus on three things. By month three, six new things have been added. Nobody noticed because each addition felt small. A coach is the person who keeps a running tally of “is this still the plan”.

Fills the gaps in skill or judgement. The marketing manager is good at execution but new to strategic decisions. The strategy expects them to make calls they have not made before. Coaching gives them a sounding board for those calls.

What coaching cannot do

Replace ownership. If the team does not own the strategy, no amount of coaching will fix it. Coaching supports owners. It does not invent them.

Force a decision. A coach can ask the question. The team has to answer it. If the team consistently does not answer the hard questions, the issue is leadership, not coaching.

Most digital strategies do not fail because they were wrong. They fail because there was nobody making sure the strategy turned into actual work.
